You can get vaccinated for Typhoid two ways: 1) a shot that lasts two years or 2) a series of 4 pills that lasts five years. I decided to go with the pills because that is one less shot and it lasts so much longer!
The way the pills work is you take one every other day until they are gone. You have to take them on an empty stomach with alot of cool water and then not eat for at least an hour. The Health Department suggests that you wake up early in the morning to take the pill and then go back to sleep. That way not only are you not hungry, but you aren't awake when the nausea sets in. Yes, nausea. A side effect of these pills can be nausea, upset stomach, diarrhea, ect. Ugh.
So, I woke up this morning at 7am and took my pill and went back to sleep. I work up an hour and a half later and was seriously nauseous. It's gotten better over the course of the day, but it sort of goes in waves - feeling terrible and then feeling ok.
I am feeling pretty good now, so I'm hoping I'm done for the night.
They say the first pill is the worst, but I will keep you posted on how the other pills go!
Oh, the things we have to do for Africa! :)
