Good Byes, Hellos and a Chill Moshi Weekend

First off - good news! The African Eye Rot is pretty much gone. I'm
still using the crazy antibiotics, and if I'm still in the clear
Wednesday I am putting my contacts back in. I can't wait. I'm going
crazy wearing my glasses, but it's better than gross pussy eyes!!

This weekend has been a mix of happy and sad. One of the things that
they don't tell you about this program is that every week volunteers
leave and it's soooo sad! A big group left this week including our
doctor and the two girls from Alaska that I was pretty close with. It
was pretty brutal.

On the upside, a new group of volunteers arrived last night! It's fun
to have new people arrive and get to know them and show them the
ropes. There are only 7 people in the new group, but there are some
interesting characters like a 72yo air force vet/chaplain and a mother
and 12yo son from SF that are travelling the world.

Some of the best news is that one of the new volunteers is a teacher
and she is assigned to Kilimahewa! It will be great to have a real
teaher there to help with the secondary school!!

Other than the goodbyes and hellos, this weekend has been very chill.
Saturday I read alot and we went into town to pick up a dress that I
had made. It is super cheap to have clothes custom made - like $14 for
a custom dress!

Today I went to church and the went to Upendo - an orphanage. I will
have to write a whole blog post about Upendo bc it is pretty terrible.
It's run by nuns and it has pretty great facilities, but the
caregivers BEAT the children with poles and don't give them water so
that they won't pee and make a mess.

It's a pretty hard place to visit, but the kids desperately need to be
loved, so it's important for us to go.

After Upendo we went to the pool to cool/cleaned up. A great
refreshing end to the day.

Now we are out at a bar called the Watering Hole that is a total
mzungu hangout. It's pretty cool here though - it's like a treehouse
and they have cheap wi-fi!

Miss you all!! Don't forget about me!! And don't forget to leave me
some love!!

  2. Hujambo!!! Halli is helping me, so hopefully this comment will actually get posted!! How could we ever forget about you!! We got your postcard today and were thrilled with the "view." And I sat down and set aside two hours to read ALL your blogs and get all caught up- what a fantastic adventure!!! We love hearing all the stories of every day life and the things you are learning, good and bad, about African life. What a blessing this is for you to be able to firsthand experience such a different lifestyle. I don't envy you some of it- like the wet tent night- but all of it is shaping you and helping you evolve. I loved your self-analysis when you said you were more rigid than you thought. Wow, what a way to learn about yourself!! We love you so much, and will continue to live vicariously through your blog. Still hope to see you this summer- we miss you so much!! xxxooo Lorri, Steve, Halli and the gang. PS- Taylor comes home Thursday and leaves Sunday for LA. Monday is her first day at Ellen!! Exciting in a WHOLE different way!

  3. Kate - I wrote this on your FB page but it never hurts to hear it twice. I think that what you're doing is amazing - you make me a very proud UA/UT girl. Brave and inspired are words that come to mind when I think about you and what you're doing to help enrich the lives of people who truly need it. Angela Merici is so proud and I will definitely pray for her intercession as you continue your work in Africa. Lots of hugs, my friend!
